Where people and nature exist in harmony.

A natural paradise hidden in the Nguu Tatu Hills on Mombasa’s Jurassic Coastline.

Just a ten-minute drive from Bamburi, Nguuni Nature Sanctuary is a hub of community, conservation and education. Home to a diverse range of Kenyan wildlife, an Education Centre and Health Clinic, Nguuni Nature Sanctuary is a testament to the power of grassroots conservation and community-led change.

The Sanctuary is managed by Baobab Trust, a non-profit organization based in Mombasa, Kenya committed to conservation through developing sustainable ecosystems.

Our History

Not so long ago, Nguuni was uninhabitable. Once a Jurrasic Shale Quarry, Nguuni was nothing more than an abandoned stretch of infertile and discarded land. Yet one man, Dr Rene Haller, gave nature a helping hand and space to grow, restoring the damage caused to the land by prolonged industrial mining activities.

Today, Nguuni stands as a thriving nature sanctuary and one of Mombasa’s last remaining green spaces — a vital refuge where local residents and eco-tourists alike can relax, explore, and reconnect with nature.

Conservation

Nguuni is a place where visitors can reconnect with the environment while supporting local sustainable development initiatives.

Known as the ‘Green-Lungs of Mombasa’, Nguuni is one of the city’s only natural spaces left for residents and tourists to enjoy. The sanctuary is a vibrant haven for biodiversity, offering a rare glimpse into some of Kenya’s most treasured natural wonders.

Endangered plant species flourish alongside sweeping acacia woodlands, creating a thriving ecosystem for over 300 bird species—many of them rare or endemic. Majestic giraffes, curious ostriches, elegant oryx, and herds of elands roam freely across the landscape, living as they have for generations. Visitors can experience the serenity of this protected environment while witnessing the harmony of wildlife and nature at its purest.

We believe that education is key to securing a sustainable future for the communities where we work.

Nguuni is home to our award-winning, solar-powered Education Centre, including a Children’s Library, Auditorium, IT Suite and Adult Learning Space. Stocked with over 11,500 books, our Education Centre supports over 115 local schools and acts as a safe space for children living in and around Mombasa.

We’re passionate about environmental education, inspiring young people to understand and protect the natural world. Through tailored school tours, interactive activities, engaging lectures, and guided bird walks, we create memorable learning experiences that connect students with conservation in action.

Community

We operate in a delicate environment where many communities lack access to healthcare.

The Nguuni Health Clinic and diagnostic laboratory provide vital, long-term support for healthy, thriving communities in Kenya. Our comprehensive services include childhood immunisations, family planning, antenatal and postnatal care, as well as essential disease prevention, mental health support and health education.

For those unable to reach our facilities, we bring vital care directly to them through our weekly mobile health outreach clinic — delivering essential services to communities where they’re needed most. Discover our services here.
